Blog: There's Nothing Like Game Day Posted

Statement

I always love being on college campuses. As an educator myself, being around the buildings and quads that saw so many students pass through on their way to fulfilling their dreams, is always a thrill. Nothing makes you feel younger than being around young people! I am partial to the occasional burger, a cold beverage on a hot day always lifts the spirits, and Oregon is justly proud of its college football teams. So, Saturday will see me pull off a twofer tailgate: Autzen and Reser, Ducks and Beavers, Oregon and Oregon State. That's a lot of burger! And there are some great young men to cheer for on the field.

This year, we can be even more excited than usual. Those Oregon Ducks are tipped to be in the new College play-offs and they are lots of fun to watch. I love my visits to Eugene: in many ways it's the perfect college town. And the campus is reliably always different from the last time I visited. There's always another building, a corner of campus that I hadn't quite discovered, and the students always seem to look younger and younger! I hate to think how old they think I look!

Of course, I've always had a soft spot for my Beavers. I first carried out research work in the OSU chemistry laboratories in 1964 and 1965, although the event I remember most about that time was Hal Holbrook's great rendition of Mark Twain on the OSU stage.

We have family links to the school, and I always like making a trip out to Corvallis. And it is good to know that the College Republicans are working hard to organize on the campus. When I am on campus I sometimes have flashbacks to dropping some of my kids off, the truck loaded with whatever they had cobbled together to assemble their apartments.

Being on both of Oregon's main college campuses never fails to make me nostalgic, but it is never less than energizing to be around such special places.

Anyway, I have some hamburger platters to prepare, I promised myself I'd check the weather reports, and, oh, I'll be collecting signatures for my term limits petition. Just because I'll be enjoying some tailgating doesn't mean I can't get people involved in throwing career politicians to the curb at the same time! If you're there, come say hello!
